I head the Center for Research on Organizations and Workplaces (here http://crow.kozminski.edu.pl is its homepage) at Kozminski University, and I co-founded NeRDS (New Research on Digital Societies, http://nerds.kozminski.edu.pl) group.
My interests include open collaboration communities, critical management studies, narrativity, storytelling, organizational archetypes, occupational identities, all studied by interpretive and qualitative methods.
Most of my research so far has been evolving around knowledge-intensive workplace, open collaboration, F/LOSS, organizations and professional culture, with particular focus on software development.
Currently, I am working on two projects: one is on lawyers professional identity (I study LLM students in American and European schools), the other is on trust and authority enactment in open-source projects on the example of Wikipedia.
I have some professional experience with managing software project, since I am the founder of a limited liability company, running, among others, the biggest and the most popular Polish online dictionary http://www.ling.pl as well as several other portals (including http://www.angielski.edu.pl or http://www.anglisci.pl or http://www.angool.com - all related to language education for Poles).
I have also been involved as an activist in the Wikimedia movement, and I currently serve on the Funds Dissemination Committee of Wikimedia Foundation.
2000-2004 I was a Ph.D. candidate in management at Kozminski University. 2004-2005 I spent as a Fulbright scholar at Cornell University. 2005-2009 I was an assistant professor of management back at Kozminski University, with an annual break to go for a semester as a visiting scholar to Harvard University (2007) and University of California, Berkeley (2008). In 2009 I defended my habilitation and became an associate professor of management. The academic year 2011-2012 I'm spending at Harvard, studying lawyers and writing up a book on Wikipedia.
I strongly believe that academic work should be interesting and fun, and I serve as the Polish Desk Chief for the Annals of Improbable Research magazine - http://improbable.com/ - more widely known as Ig Nobel Prize granting institution.edit - Andrzej K. Koźmińskiedit

Objective: The aim of the study was to explore community interest
in mental health topics during and before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Method: We gathered and analysed a large dataset (over 3 billion)
of views of 1763 English Wikipedia mental health articles, and their
counterparts in nine other language versions of Wikipedia, between
the period of January 1, 2016, and December 31, 2020.
Results: The results of this study show that the patterns of
Wikipedia searches during the pandemic changed. Interest in
articles about insecurities and paraphilias increased. There were
more searches for child abuse-related topics. Views for depression
decreased.
Discussion: We hypothesise that during the lockdown and
enforced video communication, people’s concern about selfimage and privacy arose, and the tendency to follow one’s
desires online increased. There may be a possible interaction
between media coverage and the novelty with the saturation of a
given concept in the public discourse. The observations on the
online interests of peers may become a sensitive predictor and
early sign of arising new phenomena and increase of ongoing
public health problems. The results of this study and future indepth research may contribute to providing preventive programs
including screening digital tools, and online apps for early
intervention.

Higher education around the world is currently undergoing a neo-liberal administrative takeover. The drive to reduce costs and increased bureaucratization do not serve any other purpose than increasing the power of the universities’ administration. The reasons for allowing this situation to happen are related to scholars’ inertia and subscribing to a belief that academia can and should be impractical. As a result, the emerging corporate university, McDonaldized model relies increasingly on contingent and deskilled faculty, effectively eliminating the traditional academic freedoms. We conclude with suggestions for possible courses of action to make a constructive counter-movement to the radical changes taking place. We propose that we can begin addressing the predicaments of higher education through re-discovering our role in the society, by re-conceptualizing the disciplinary boundaries of academic fields, by forcing the de-bunkerization of academic career and work, and by starting ...

Urgent global research demands real-time dissemination of precise data. Wikidata, a collaborative and openly licensed knowledge graph available in RDF format, provides an ideal forum for exchanging structured data that can be verified and consolidated using validation schemas and bot edits. In this research paper, we catalog an automatable task set necessary to assess and validate the portion of Wikidata relating to the COVID-19 disease, its causative virus, and key aspects of the resulting pandemic. These tasks assess relational and statistical data and are implemented in SPARQL, a query language for semantic databases. We demonstrate the efficiency of our methods for evaluating structured information on COVID-19 in Wikidata, and its applicability in collaborative ontologies and knowledge graphs more broadly. We show the advantages and limitations of our proposed approach by comparing it to other methods for validation of linked web data.

Zero Waste (ZW) is a relatively new concept of waste reduction, which encourages life cycle thinking in the design of new products and services. Today ZW is becoming a lifestyle trend and social media amplifies this trend and helps to propagate the movement. The popularisation of the ZW concept through social media can be attributed to Bea Johnson, author of a bestselling book on ZW living. Many tips on how to achieve ZW living in Bea Johnson's book refer to food packaging and packaging materials, and literature shows that global consumers are increasingly concerned about the negative environmental impacts of packaging waste. Given the popularity of ZW lifestyle in social media, this study explores the ZW trend as reported by users of the popular social media platform Twitter through the lens of Bea Johnson's ZW living model, taking into consideration the public concern on packaging and packaging materials. For the purposes of this paper, Twitter discourse on ZW is used to draw conclusions on the popular understanding of its impact and effects. This paper uses Thick Big Data study of the collected 124,077 tweets with #zerowaste hashtag. In the study, it was found that majority of popular tweets with #zerowaste hashtag refer to packaging and food packaging. The majority of tweets focused on plastics, and the sentiment of this packaging material was negative. Other packaging materials found in #zerowaste hashtag tweets include paper, glass and metal, and the sentiment for those materials is gradually more positive.

This study explores firm responses to stakeholder-initiated involuntary disclosures, which are disclosures made by stakeholders about an organization but are against the will of managers, and subsequent stakeholder reactions. We analyzed 134,977 firm Twitter replies from seven companies to identify their responses to involuntary corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosures and find that companies demonstrate different attitudes toward engagement in the exchange about involuntary disclosures. Whereas some companies communicate with stakeholders, others are almost silent. When a company engages in communication with its stakeholders, the communication is mostly one-way, and mortification or dissent is the likely response strategy. We also find that while stakeholders generally do not continue to engage with corporate communications, they are likely to respond when companies deny the information revealed by involuntary disclosure. Our results suggest that involuntary disclosures on social media are not able to improve communication between stakeholders and companies.

The authors wanted to verify a popular belief that women scholars have been disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. We studied the first names of authors of 266,409 articles from 2813 journals in 21 disciplines, and we found no significant differences between men and women in publication patterns between 2021, 2020, and 2019 overall. However, we found significant differences in publication patterns between gender in different disciplines. In addition, in disciplines where the proportion of women authors is higher, there are fewer single-authored articles. In the multi-author articles if the first author is female, there is more gender balance among authors, although there are still fewer women co-authors.

As Godwin's Law states, "as a discussion on the Internet grows longer, the likelihood of a person being compared to Hitler, or another Nazi reference, increases." However, even though the theoretical probability of an infinitely long conversation including any term should approach 1.0, in practice, conversations cannot be infinite in length, and this long-accepted axiom is impossible to observe. By analyzing 199 million Reddit posts, we note that, after a certain point, the probability of observing the terms "Nazi" or "Hitler" actually decreases significantly with conversation length. In addition, a corollary of Godwin's Law holds that "the invocation of Godwin's Law is usually done by an individual that is losing the argument," and, thus, that comparisons to Nazis are a signal of a discussion's end. In other words, comparing one's interlocutor to Hitler is supposed to be a conversation-killer. While it is difficult to determine whether a discussion on a given topic ended or not in a large dataset, we observe a marked increase

As Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) increases in importance and use by global corporations, understanding the dynamics of its communities becomes critical. This paper measures up to 21 years of activities in 1314 individual projects and 1.4 billion lines of code managed. After analyzing the FOSS activities on the projects and organizations level, such as commits frequency, source code lines, and code comments, we find that there is less activity now than there was a decade ago. Moreover, our results suggest a greater decrease in the activities in large and well-established FOSS organizations. Our findings indicate that as technologies and business strategies related to FOSS mature, the role of large formal FOSS organizations serving as intermediary between developers diminishes.

From 50,080 tweets in the English language, we analysed the linked media sources and conducted a network detection study. Results: We found that the most frequently retweeted tweets were full of negative information, and in many cases came from media sources that are well-known for misinformation. Our analysis identified large coordination networks involved in political astroturfing and vaccine diplomacy in South Asia but also vaccine advocacy networks associated with European Commission employees. Conclusions: The results of this study show that Twitter discourse about #AstraZeneca is filled with misinformation and bad press, and may be distributed not only organically by anti-vaxxer activists but also systematically by professional sources.

Contrary to a popular belief of lawyers having the most strict perception of law, law professionals actually strongly skew toward more favorable views of digital sharing. According to our qualitative study, relying on in-depth interviews with 50 Harvard lawyers, digital piracy is quite acceptable. It is considered fair, especially among friends and for noncommercial purposes. We argue that this not only can indicate that the existing law is becoming outdated because of its inability to be enforced, but also that ethically it is not corresponding to what is considered fair, good service, or being societally beneficial. The common perception of relying on a fixed price for digital content is eroding. We show that on the verges of business, society, and law, there is a potential for the new paradigm of digital commons to emerge.

Background: AIDS, caused by HIV, is a leading cause of mortality in Africa. HIV/AIDS is among the greatest public health challenges confronting health authorities, with South Africa having the greatest prevalence of the disease in the world. There is little research into how Africans meet their health information needs on HIV/AIDS online, and this research gap impacts programming and educational responses to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Objective: This paper reports on how, in general, interest in the search terms "HIV" and "AIDS" mirrors the increase in people living with HIV and the decline in AIDS cases in South Africa. Methods: Data on search trends for HIV and AIDS for South Africa were found using the search terms "HIV" and "AIDS" (categories: health, web search) on Google Trends. This was compared with data on estimated adults and children living with HIV, and AIDS-related deaths in South Africa, from the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, and also with search interest in the topics "HIV" and "AIDS" on Wikipedia Afrikaans, the most developed local language Wikipedia service in South Africa. Nonparametric statistical tests were conducted to support the trends and associations identified in the data. Results: Google Trends shows a statistically significant decline (P<.001) in search interest for AIDS relative to HIV in South Africa. This trend mirrors progress on the ground in South Africa and is significantly associated (P<.001) with a decline in AIDS-related deaths and people living longer with HIV. This trend was also replicated on Wikipedia Afrikaans, where there was a greater interest in HIV than AIDS. Conclusions: This statistically significant (P<.001) association between interest in the search terms "HIV" and "AIDS" in South Africa (2004-2019) and the number of people living with HIV and AIDS in the country (2004-2019) might be an indicator that multilateral efforts at combating HIV/AIDS-particularly through awareness raising and behavioral interventions in South Africa-are bearing fruit, and this is not only evident on the ground, but is also reflected in the online information seeking on the HIV/AIDS pandemic. We acknowledge the limitation that in studying the association between Google search interests on HIV/AIDS and cases/deaths, causal relationships should not be drawn due to the limitations of the data.

In this article, we draw on a survey conducted with elite upcoming lawyers from all around the world to shed new light on the ethical acceptability of file sharing practices. Although file sharing is typically illegal, our findings show that lawyers overwhelmingly perceive it as an acceptable social practice. The main criterion used by lawyers to decide on the ethical acceptability of file sharing is whether or not the infringer derives any monetary benefits from it. Further, our findings show that lawyers in the public sector (including judiciary and academia) are even more tolerant of online copyright infringement than those in the private sector. Interestingly, our data suggests that this is largely the result of self-selection: lawyers who lean more on the side of broad disclosure and social sharing tend to orient themselves toward the public sector. Implications for the current state of the debate on the reform of copyright law are discussed.

Wikipedia is by far the largest online encyclopedia, and the number of errors it contains is on par with the professional sources even in specialized topics such as biology or medicine. Yet, the academic world is still treating it with great skepticism because of the types of inaccuracies present there, the widespread plagiarism from Wikipedia, and historic biases, as well as jealousy regarding the loss of the knowledge dissemination monopoly. This article argues that it is high time not only to acknowledge Wikipedia's quality but also to start actively promoting its use and development in academia.

Background: Wikipedia, the multilingual encyclopedia, was founded in 2001 and is the world’s largest and most visited online
general reference website. It is widely used by health care professionals and students. The inclusion of journal articles in Wikipedia
is of scholarly interest, but the time taken for a journal article to be included in Wikipedia, from the moment of its publication to
its incorporation into Wikipedia, is unclear.
Objective: We aimed to determine the ranking of the most cited journals by their representation in the English-language medical
pages of Wikipedia. In addition, we evaluated the number of days between publication of journal articles and their citation in
Wikipedia medical pages, treating this measure as a proxy for the information-diffusion rate.
Methods: We retrieved the dates when articles were included in Wikipedia and the date of journal publication from Crossref
by using an application programming interface.
Results: From 11,325 Wikipedia medical articles, we identified citations to 137,889 journal articles from over 15,000 journals.
There was a large spike in the number of journal articles published in or after 2002 that were cited by Wikipedia. The higher the
importance of a Wikipedia article, the higher was the mean number of journal citations it contained (top article, 48.13 [SD 33.67];
lowest article, 6.44 [SD 9.33]). However, the importance of the Wikipedia article did not affect the speed of reference addition.
The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews was the most cited journal by Wikipedia, followed by The New England Journal
of Medicine and The Lancet. The multidisciplinary journals Nature, Science, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of
Sciences were among the top 10 journals with the highest Wikipedia medical article citations. For the top biomedical journal
papers cited in Wikipedia's medical pages in 2016-2017, it took about 90 days (3 months) for the citation to be used in Wikipedia.
Conclusions: We found evidence of “recentism,” which refers to preferential citation of recently published journal articles in
Wikipedia. Traditional high-impact medical and multidisciplinary journals were extensively cited by Wikipedia, suggesting that
Wikipedia medical articles have robust underpinnings. In keeping with the Wikipedia policy of citing reviews/secondary sources
in preference to primary sources, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews was the most referenced journal.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to show the limits of a-hierarchical organization in the Wikimedia movement governance model. Wikimedia governance, as well as the dynamic transformations it is currently undergoing, remains to be covered by the literature on organization and management studies; yet, they exemplify the problems with the " organization of the future, " which is highly idealized throughout the management literature.
Design/methodology/approach – The research design relies on an ethnographic, long-term, participative study of the Wikipedia community at large. The methods used rely mainly on discourse analysis and interviews. The study benefits from the unique participant immersion of the researcher (who spent six years participating in the studied community, making over five edits each day on average, and being elected to several positions of highest trust within the organization).
Findings – The findings show that the open, participative, and democratic character of the organization, which in theory is oriented toward sustainable solidarity, as well as the semi-anonymous character of some of the members' identities, makes the community more empowered yet more belligerent. Also, the entirely open and flat governance model makes it more difficult to establish a stable leadership consensus.
Research limitations/implications – Research is limited due to its methodological design, as it relies on in-depth qualitative case studies, rather than wider analysis. Further quantitative research is needed to confirm the findings on a bigger scale and in other open collaboration organizations. Practical implications – The findings show that participative organizational design, especially in open collaboration projects, have adverse effects in leading to overly confrontational and quarrelsome organizational culture, which not only makes decision making more difficult, but also deters people less used to debating and conflict.
Social implications – The social implications of the findings suggest that even in highly democratized structures, some minimal forms of leadership, and governance are useful to facilitate the decision-making processes.
Originality/value – This paper extends the understanding of organizational dynamics and governance in open collaboration organizations, and exposes the shortcomings of this model, which are an inevitable trade-off for its indisputable benefits.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to see how digital societies' studies can be inspired by cross-cultural management. Design/methodology/approach – Theory critical analysis and review. Findings – The paper reveals many similarities and analogies, allowing for useful connections between cross-cultural management research, and studying digital societies. Originality/value – By exposing methodological and theoretical links of cross-cultural management field in general, and Magala's contribution in particular, the following paper helps in better understanding of contemporary research on digital societies, as well as allows for the use of already proven methodologies and approaches in the emerging field of the internet studies.

Higher education around the world is currently undergoing a neo-liberal administrative takeover. The drive to reduce
costs and increased bureaucratization do not serve any other purpose than increasing the power of the universities’
administration. The reasons for allowing this situation to happen are related to scholars’ inertia and subscribing to a belief
that academia can and should be impractical. As a result, the emerging corporate university, McDonaldized model relies
increasingly on contingent and deskilled faculty, effectively eliminating the traditional academic freedoms. We conclude with
suggestions for possible courses of action to make a constructive counter-movement to the radical changes taking place.
We propose that we can begin addressing the predicaments of higher education through re-discovering our role in the
society, by re-conceptualizing the disciplinary boundaries of academic fields, by forcing the de-bunkerization of academic
career and work, and by starting up multi-disciplinary learning communities at universities. We argue that collective action
is needed immediately, if any positive change is possible at all before more of higher education is more deeply degraded.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present the results of a qualitative study of software engineers' playful behaviors at work.
Design/methodology/approach – The interviewed software engineers come from two European and three American companies. The research is based on ethnographical data, gathered in two longitudinal studies2005-2008 . The methods used in the study include open-ended unstructured interviews, participant observations, stories collection, and shadowings.
Findings – It is found that the currently dominant theory of normative control explaining software engineers workplace diminishes leisure and entertainment attributes of knowledge work. Fun at workplace is discovered to be an important, if not crucial, element of everyday programmers' job.
Originality/value – The study contributes to the literature by replying to the call for more research on high-tech organizational practices, and on non-job related behaviors at workplace. It reveals playful performance as a constituent for knowledge work and may contribute towards a better understanding of the role played by fun and playful behavior in creative problem-solving and inventing.

This book provides a thorough review of tested qualitative methods often used in organization studies, and outlines the challenges and essential requirements of designing a qualitative research project. The methods examined include case studies, observation, interviewing and the repertory grid technique. By highlighting certain key ‘rules’ for carrying out qualitative research and describing issues that should be avoided, this second volume of Qualitative Methodologies in Organization Studies is essential reading for academics and researchers who wish to understand the current state of qualitative data gathering within organization studies. Those exploring organization studies will find this two-volume collection extremely valuable as it contains robust contributions from highly-skilled authors who are actively researching in this field.

With an emphasis on peer–produced content and collaboration, Wikipedia exemplifies a departure from traditional management and organizational models. This iconic "project" has been variously characterized as a hive mind and an information revolution, attracting millions of new users even as it has been denigrated as anarchic and plagued by misinformation. Have Wikipedia's structure and inner workings promoted its astonishing growth and enduring public relevance?
In Common Knowledge?, Dariusz Jemielniak draws on his academic expertise and years of active participation within the Wikipedia community to take readers inside the site, illuminating how it functions and deconstructing its distinctive organization. Against a backdrop of misconceptions about its governance, authenticity, and accessibility, Jemielniak delivers the first ethnography of Wikipedia, revealing that it is not entirely at the mercy of the public: instead, it balances open access and power with a unique bureaucracy that takes a page from traditional organizational forms. Along the way, Jemielniak incorporates fascinating cases that highlight the tug of war among the participants as they forge ahead in this pioneering environment.

This critical ethnographic study of knowledge workers and knowledge-intensive organization workplaces focuses on the issues of timing and schedules, the perception of formality and trust and distrust in software development as well as motivation and occupational identity among software engineers.
The book is a cross-cultural, comparative study of American and European high-tech workplaces that addresses the issues currently of interest to both Academia and to practice and provides a rare international comparison of organizations from both sides of the Atlantic. Its conclusions shed new light on the problems typical for software projects. The book specifically focuses on, and gives voice to, the perspectives of knowledge workers rather than managers and will thus be useful to not only scholars and human resource managers from software companies, but also to high-tech professionals.
Scholars and professionals in organization studies, management, HRM, innovation and knowledge management will find this book engaging and enlightening.
